DEPRESSION TREATMENT IN MALAGA
Neuromodulation therapy to treat depression
Depression does not always improve with medication or psychological therapy.
Dr. Lafuente, a specialist in Clinical Neurophysiology, has extensive experience in non-invasive neuromodulation techniques supported by scientific evidence. These techniques have proven effective in improving mood and reducing depressive symptoms, especially in patients with insufficient response to conventional treatments.

New options when depression persists
When depression persists despite conventional treatment, neuromodulation offers an effective alternative. Techniques such as repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can help you regain emotional balance and a sense of control in your daily life.
How does EMTr work?
It is a medical treatment that applies magnetic pulses to stimulate, in a controlled manner, areas of the brain related to mood. It does not require surgery or anesthesia. The goal is to reactivate brain circuits involved in motivation, energy, and emotional regulation.

Is it a safe treatment?
Yes. It is a medical treatment that has been used for years in hospitals and specialized centers. En la mayoría de los casos, los efectos secundarios son leves y transitorios.
When is this treatment recommended?
It is especially recommended in cases of depression with an insufficient response to pharmacological treatment or when it is not well tolerated. In addition, in March 2024 the FDA in the United States authorized the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) as an adjunct treatment for major depressive disorder in adolescents aged 15 to 21.
What is a session of this treatment like?
Sessions are straightforward and well tolerated. You remain seated and awake while the stimulation is applied in a controlled, supervised manner; it does not require anesthesia or sedation. Afterwards, you can get back to your day as normal.
What do you notice during the session? Does it hurt?
The session is usually comfortable. During the procedure, you may feel tapping or slight pressure on the scalp. In general, it’s a tolerable sensation and is not considered painful, although at first it may be uncomfortable for some people.
How long does the treatment last and how many sessions do I need?
The duration depends on the protocol: some sessions last around 20–40 minutes and, in certain cases, there are shorter protocols (such as theta burst) that can be done in about 3 minutes per session. The number of sessions depends on your case and is determined after a personalized clinical assessment.
Can rTMS be combined with medication or psychotherapy?
Yes. It can be used as an adjunct treatment, enhancing the results of medication and psychotherapy.
When do you start to see results?
It varies from person to person. Some people notice improvement in the first few weeks, while others notice it later.
