What problems is rTMS (TMS) used for?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (tMS) is a widely studied technique. In some indications, such as treatment-resistant depression or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), its usefulness is strongly supported by scientific evidence and regulatory approvals. In other conditions, its use may be considered off-label or within specific protocols, always following an individualized medical assessment. Among the most frequent indications are:
Psychiatric area
- Depression.
- Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
- Anxiety disorders (generalized anxiety, panic, phobias, social anxiety) and anxiety associated with depression.
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), in selected cases.
- Addictions and craving control (including gambling addiction), as a complement to a comprehensive approach.
Neurological area and neurorehabilitation
- Stroke: support for post-stroke recovery (motor function, hand, gait and balance), in rehabilitation programs.
- Aphasia and other post-stroke language disorders in rehabilitation protocols.
- Movement disorders: Parkinson’s disease (motor and non-motor symptoms in selected protocols), and other movement disorders (assessed on a case-by-case basis).
- Ataxias (under evaluation depending on the case).
- Tinnitus (under evaluation in certain profiles).
- Migraine (specific protocols in specialized units).
Pain area
- Chronic neuropathic pain (central or peripheral).
- Central post-stroke pain, in selected cases.
- Other chronic pain syndromes with a neuropathic component (under evaluation depending on the case).
Sleep area and associated symptoms
- Insomnia and sleep disturbances, especially when associated with anxiety, depression or pain (in selected protocols).
Area of cognition and associated memories
- Cognitive support (memory, attention and executive functions) and cognitive impairment in early stages, usually combined with cognitive stimulation (in selected protocols).
